Preceding unsigned comment added by Edward27821 ( talk Generally even if the provider's default is POP3 Thunderbird auto-selects IMAP (for safety) so that if your machine crashes bad, You don't loose your messages, i.e. If I'm not mistaken, when POP3 is selected (by user) then all mail is removed from server when downloaded. What does this column mean? If it means that a mail client can download a list of message headers and the user chooses which mail bodies he wants to download, then Thunderbird is very well able to do this.
